Changing Contours of Work: Jobs and Opportunities in the New Economy

Changing Contours of Work: Jobs and Opportunities in the New Economy

$14.34

""This volume provides a solid, concise overview of the current state of work, mostly based on US patterns but with some comparative information."""Changing Contours of Work, by Sweet and Meiksins, represents a truly excellent and synthetic sociological guide for understanding the historical and contemporary interplay of work, inequality, and human dignity. Moving beyond simplistic conceptions of "old" versus "new" economy, the authors demonstrate, through careful aggregate analyses and carefully selected anecdotes, the ways in which old and new work forms continue to intersect, how various status groups continue to be differentially impacted, and why so many workers in the current era face job insecurity, overwork, and maltreatment. The well-articulated position of the authors regarding sorely needed challenges to these trends, and where such challenges might arise, are equally important and deserving of attention from social scientists, students, and policymakers alike"-Vincent J. Roscigno, Ohio State University and author of The Voice of Southern Labor and The Face of Discrimination: How Race and Gender Impact Work and Home Lives (Rowman & Littlefield). "Changing Contours challenges the widespread notion of post-industrialism, offers a careful analysis of demographics as they intersect a changing labor market, and devotes an entire chapter to a broad discussion of working time. This is a book that students will find informative, and possibly unsettling, but in the end they’ll find hope in the possibilities for agency and change"-Cynthia Negrey, University of LouisvilleA comparative review of the historical transformations in work Opening with engaging vignettes of four workers, Jamal (a low-wage worker), Eileen (a high-powered professional), Dan (a displaced autoworker), and Chi-Ying (a young, Chinese, employee), Changing Contours of Work: Jobs and Opportunities in the New Economy frames the development of jobs and employment opportunities in an international comparative perspective, revealing the historical transformations of work and examining the often profound effects that these changes have had on employee satisfaction. This text provides a rich analysis of the overtime-laden American workplace in the larger context of an integrated global economy and offers strategic recommendations for making the new economy work for us all. Key Features – Provides international comparative perspectives on work and work prospects throughout the text, such as specific policies already in place in Europe that can lead to improved existences for workers and their families – Considers the structure of today’s work environment and its implications for fulfillment on and off the job – Highlights the impact of socialization, social networks, and structural forms of discrimination – Addresses inequalities and divides, such as race, ethnicity, gender, and class, illuminating the forces that separate w

Newlyn Copper: Arts & Crafts Copper Work in Newlyn

Newlyn Copper: Arts & Crafts Copper Work in Newlyn

$39.99

This is the first major study of the Newlyn Industrial Class, a small but very important part of the Arts and Crafts Movement in Victorian Britain. Established in Cornwall in 1890 with help from the Home Arts Industries Association and local artists, and teaching from John Pearson of the Guild of Handicraft, the Newlyn Class was started largely as a philanthropic gesture. Aimed at improving the quality of life for the young men of this small fishing village, it represented an almost unique partnership between artist and craftsman. The copperwork produced at Newlyn–now highly collectable–was in the fashionable ‘artistic’ style drawing on medieval imagery and honest construction ‘by hammer and by hand’. Apart from the social benefits which the Class brought to the village, Newlyn copperwork has provided a heritage of useful and beautiful objects. The decoration of Newlyn work, with repousse designs of sea creatures, sea birds and scenes from the fishing village, shows the consistent influence of artist/designer John Mackenzie who gave the work of the Class its character and visual appeal. The quality of construction of the Newlyn copper pieces, its durability and the range of object and designs created by the craftsmen make the copperwork of Newlyn a joy for collectors.

Building with Nature: Inspiration for the Arts & Crafts Home

Building with Nature: Inspiration for the Arts & Crafts Home

$14.46

Much has been said about the Arts & Crafts spirit of Californians, their appreciation of the land, their desire to build "simple" yet interesting houses that connect with the outdoors (sleeping porches, gardens, verandas, terraces, and so on), and their love of wilderness areas. This new edition of the classic, Building with Nature: Roots of the San Francisco Bay Region Tradition, focuses on the beginnings (1865 and on) of the Bay Area shingle style and Arts & Crafts collaboration in California, and the origins of the trend toward building simple rustic homes in harmony with nature. Freudenheim explores how and why a small, influential group of Californians (including Joseph Worcester, Bernard Maybeck, Charles Keeler, William Keith, Charles Lummis, A. Page Brown, and others)–all of whom had come from the East or from England–were especially devoted to Ruskin and the Arts & Crafts style and how this combined with their dedication to California’s natural beauty to create a unique architectural movement. Building with Nature: The Development of the California Arts and Crafts Home presents some revolutionary ideas, including exciting new material on the San Francisco Swedenborgian Church, now a National Landmark and considered to be the model for several lines of Mission-Style furniture; new information on the architectural development of Russian Hill; and the similarities and differences of the almost simultaneous development of the Arts & Crafts movements in England and in the Bay Area. Freudenheim examines how Worcester and his circle encouraged less materialism through architecture that complemented a simpler life in tune with nature, and includes letters from Worcester to his cousin, architect Daniel H. Burnham, along with previously unpublished original documents relating to architectural developments in the Bay Area at the turn of the century. Leslie Freudenheim is the coauthor of Building with Nature: Roots of the San Francisco Bay Region Tradition (Gibbs Smith, Publisher, 1974). Freudenheim has continued to work on architectural history and related areas, and has been published in the Baltimore Sun and the Washington Post. She also served as editor of Federal Design Matters for the Design Department, National Endowment for the Arts. Since 2002 she has returned to studying Arts & Crafts homes and the architectural and social roots of this movement.
