Ozark Country by W. K. McNeil A stimulating encounter with the vigorous mountain culture and enduring folklife of the Ozarks This study of folklife in the Ozarks surveys one of Americas most fascinating regions and shows its distinctive cultural imprint. The living heritage of Ozark country is detailed here beside the history of its earliest settlements and its unique folkways. Although many who pioneered in the Ozarks migrated from southern Appalachia, Ozark is not Appalachia West, for the flavor of Ozark culture is rare and particular. This book is an expression of that lasting distinctiveness. The folklife of the home (its foodways, crafts, and folkways), of the workplace (its architecture and its crafts), of Ozark leisure (music, dance, folksongs, ballads, games, and narratives) are given special attention here so that the singular nature of life in Ozark country can be revealed as an ongoing tradition rather than a static preservation. In the Ozark region, perhaps as in no other place in America, the essential character of the people is stamped with this combination of what is past and what is present. W. K. McNeil (deceased) was a folklorist at the Ozark Folk Center. He wrote and edited many books about folklore in the southern United States.

Mamie: An Ozark Mountain Girl of Courage

Mamie: An Ozark Mountain Girl of Courage

As a child growing up in Cleburne County, Arkansas, I learned most of my familys past from my mother. My mother spent her entire life in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. The Ozark Mountains, with their beautiful hardwood trees, rocky and rolling hills, clear running streams, wild game, and the Little Red River were a living paradise to some of the greatest people in the world. The Ozark Mountain people were often characterized as being raggedy, barefooted hill folks, who talked funny and used bad grammar. Most of them were considered to be illiterate, and if they were lucky, they might have a fourth grade education. They were considered to be different from most folks in Arkansas because of their superstitions, old remedies, and funny ways. Most of the hill folks in Van Buren and Cleburne counties either dipped snuff or chewed tobacco. Several of them made their living making and selling moonshine. Besides going barefooted, the men wore overalls, and the women wore dresses made of flour sacks as their main wardrobes. Most of the older ladies wore an apron over their dress around the house. Although, they were different, they were some of the best and friendliest people in the world. If they liked you, they would give you the shirts off their backs. If they didnt like you, well, no telling what might happen to you after dark. The Ozark Mountain people made their living off the land. They had large families and worked hard. This is the story of Mamie Totten Barger, an Ozark Mountain girl, and her life of struggles, triumphs, and courage. Author: Barger, Carl J. Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 340 Publication Date: 2005/12/01 Language: English Dimensions: 9.00 x 6.00 x 0.76 inches
