Textiles of the Arts and Crafts Movement

Textiles of the Arts and Crafts Movement

$22.94

This is a comprehensive survey of textile designs in the English Arts and Crafts style for twenty five years after the first Arts and Crafts Exhibition in 1888, these English textiles were shown throughout Europe and the United States, influencing designers and attracting a large public. The refined creations of Arthur Silver (including Liberty’s celebrated Peacock Feather), the distinctive designs of C. F. A. Voysey, the floral patterns of Lindsay Butterfield and George Haite all were, and continue to be, a source of delight and inspiration. Linda Parry first examines the evolution and development of the style and discusses the whole range of Arts and Crafts textiles printed and woven fabrics, tapestries and carpets, lace and embroidery. She the presents an alphabetical annotated catalogue that provides invaluable information on designers, manufacturers, and shops. The illustrations have been selected from the out standing collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and are supplemented by notable examples from other museums. For this new edition, many of the illustrations that were previously printed in black and white are now reproduced in full color. Also included are rare period photographs of designers and of the fabrics in use in Victorian interiors.

First Published July 1948 Three Reprintings Second Edition September 1962 PRINTED Ef THE LOTTED STATES OF AMERICA To my unje HETTY PREFACE Metal Art Crafts is a book of materials, tools, processes, and projects designed for the use of those who are interested in exploring the various areas of metalcraft. Each individual material used in the craft shop is described in detail including such pertinent information which it is necessary to know when selecting and ordering the materials needed. All tools com mon to metalcraft work are illustrated and supplemented with an explana tion and description of the particular function of each. The object of this section is to acquaint the reader with the proper use and nomenclature of each hand and machine tool used in metalcraft work. The section on processes and operations has been organized in such a manner that the metal-worker can look up the directions for any particular phase of metal craft inwhich he may be interested. Twenty-two projects have been grouped in the final chapter, each in cluding a drawing and picture of the finished article and, on the opposite page, a bill of material and the step-by-step procedure necessary for the construction of the project. Projects have been arranged in groups involv ing the various phases of metalcraft work. For this reason, the beginner need not necessarily start with project number one. It is suggested, how ever, that the beginner select a basic project before attempting one which may be too difficult. Before any project in chapter four is attempted, reference should be made to the more detailed description of the materials, tools, and processes as described in the previous chapters. In preparing this book, the author has enlisted the assistance of a num ber of former students who are training to be either industrial arts or craft teachers. To these students he wishes to express his sincere appreciation. My thanks also to Professor Ray E. Raines and Professor John V. Adams, of the Department of Vocational Education, New York University, who generously reviewed portions of the manuscript. J. G. M. Baldwin, N. Y. CONTENTS Preface v CHAPTER PAGE I. Still Open: The Guide to Traditional London Shops

Still Open: The Guide to Traditional London Shops

$19.85

London is world famous for its multitude of shops, but Knightsbridge and Oxford Street are just the tip of the iceberg. Each area of London – from Hackney to Hampstead, from Putney to Peckham – has its own distinctive atmosphere, shops and unique history. Unfortunately, the homogenisation of the downtown is beginning to blur these distinctions. Still Open is an intimate tour of some of the capital’s best-kept secrets, the traditional shops that have managed to stay open and flourish in the face of this increasingly fierce competition. From the pie and mash shops of the East End, to the 1950s Italian delis of Soho, to James Taylor and Son’s classic umbrella shop on Gower Street, Still Open also takes in butchers, florists, coffee shops, clothes shops and milliners. The establishments’ interiors and exteriors are beautifully photographed and the history of each shop is told by their proprietors and customers. Still Open is at once a social history, a photographic essay on interior design through the ages and an affectionate look at the last vestiges of romance in the commercial center of England.
